Cheng Tin Hung
Cheng Tin-hung was born in the village of San Xiang in Guangdong Province in 1930. He learned Tai Chi Chuan from his uncle Cheng Wing-kwong initially and then from Qi Min-xuan. Cheng Tin Hung became famous after defeating the 3 Time Taiwanese middleweight champion in a contest, being the only Hong Kong fighter to win against the Taiwanese. He trained Full-contact fighters who more often than not defeated their hard style Kung-Fu opponents. He trained teachers to train teachers , a method which has been continued by Dan Docherty and Ian Cameron. He was known in his younger days as the Tai Chi Bodyguard because he would defend Tai Chi practitioners anywhere. To show that the cultivation of the mind was just as important as the cultivation of the body he wrote four books and many articles expounding the principles and practise of the art of Taijiquan. In his book Tai Chi Sabre, Sword and Spear , Cheng Tin Hung says. "The Tai Chi Chuan expert practises the hand form in order to cultivate the mind; he practises the sword to nourish the chi; he practises the sabre to strengthen his resolve; he practises the spear to increase wisdom; he practises internal strength to develop jing (focused power). The hand form is the foundation for the effective usage of weapons. If the hand form is skilful then nothing will go wrong." Cheng Tin Hung recently passed away and so it is left to us to continue his legacy. |
