Carl started martial arts in 1978 with the Shaolin Kung Fu Association where he was introduced to full contact fighting. Carl Burgess He learnt Thai boxing techniques before moving onto Wing Chun and Monkey Boxing in the early 80's.

He started training in Taijiquan in 1986 under the tutelage of Dan Docherty,a former South East Asian Martial Arts Champion, who taught Wudang Tai Chi Chuan which is alternatively known as Practical Tai Chi Chuan International

Carl has been an inside the door student of Dan Docherty since 1987.

Carl is a Level Seven Instructor in the Practical Tai Chi Chuan International System and focusses primarily on teaching people who wish to learn Taijiquan as a martial art and for competition combat.

He is a registered instructor with the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts and a Grade A Instructor with the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain. He is a European and British Championship Referee and Judge.

To succeed in Tai Chi Chuan one requires a sophisticated understanding of the laws of mechanics and human physiology coupled with rigorous application of the theory and practise of all the aspects of Taijiquan which can only be acquired from a competent instructor.
