From Form To Function

In the form example there is no footwork employed and the attack is predetermined to make the application work. To enable this application work against a proper attack then correct avoidance stepping must be employed
When practising realistically the punches will vary and the hands separate to perform different tasks. The form provides a template for action from which different applications can bb derived dependent upon the situation. So although the action may appear to be in the form as two hands being raised in Beginning Style, the application can also be performed with just one hand.
It should be obvious that the applications depend on the action of the legs and waist and that the body leads and the arms follow. This is often difficult for beginners to grasp when practicing applications in the normal way as their focus is mainly on the hands.
Due to the variable nature of the speed and directions of the attacks the application must also vary to match this. Thus it is not obvious to the external observer what application is actually being performed, especially if the practitioner is very experienced as they are then able to minimise their movements and hence disguise what they are doing.
